Domaine d'EugenieAn Atherton Wine Imports Direct DomaineDomaine d’Eugenie was created when the owner of Chateau Latour, Francois Pinault, purchased the iconic vineyards of Domaine Rene Engel. The winemaking at this new, small domaine is spearheaded by enologist Michel Mallard. His team is held to the exacting standards of Frederic Engerer, director of Chateau Latour in Pauillac, as well as Chateau Grillet in the Rhone Valley. Here, modern technology is paired in equal doses with tradition. For instance, primary fermentation is done in oak tanks, as tradition dictates. But Mallard’s team specially constructed new tanks to fit each of the domaine’s vineyard plots, and jacketed them to precisely regulate temperatures during fermentation. They vinify with some whole clusters (often around 1/3rd) and have old vines in very choice locations within each vineyard. The Clos Vougeot is from vines over 60 years old near the Chateau. Their parcel of Echezeaux is in the En Orveaux sector and the vines were planted in 1924 and 1979. The Vosne Brulees is taken from their 60+ year old vines in the superior upper portion of the vineyard. Two-thirds of the Vosne AC is declassified Brulees. Domaine d’Eugenie may only own 6.51 hectares in total, but each plot emphatically represents the greatness of each of these vineyards. Praise for Domaine d'Eugenie"I found the quality of the Eugénie 2016s to be excellent with first-rate purity of expression. I also very much liked their now in-bottle 2015s and in particular the Clos de Vougeot and the Grands Ech are magnificent.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound “The 2017 vintage—the eleventh for this new carnation of the erstwhile Domaine Engel—is a success for Domaine d'Eugénie and the energetic Michel Mallard, delivering supple, expressive and seductive wines that are true to their underlying appellations.” – William Kelley, The Wine Advocate “For me, the standout cru is their Clos de Vougeot that just shines. It was always a great wine under Philippe Engel, and Michel has recaptured the precision, that intangible spirit that takes it to a higher, intellectual level.” – Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate “The wines now represent what Frédéric Engerer wants them to be, though he is such a perfectionist that he may never achieve his absolute ideal.” – Jasper Morris, MW, Inside Burgundy Featured Vineyards
